Title | Pre Conquest cross fragment, St Oswald's Church, Guiseley |
Description | One of three fragments of Pre Conquest cross, found in the north wall of Guiseley Parish Church during restoration in 1831. This PRN is a cross shaft, which used to be associated with a cross base of a different style. The shaft is chiselled in low relief throughout, with one tall panel on the upper half of each face, the lower half was kept plain. This shaft has some similar designs to the cross head (PRN 2411) but it is not certain if they form the same cross. At the bottom of one of the shaft panels is a Viking sword which may belong to a seated figure of a warrior but this face is so worn that it is impossible to make anything out. The other faces are filled with scroll work. This fragment probably dates to the late 9th century. |
