TitlePre-Conquest cross fragment at St Oswald's Church
DescriptionOne of seven Pre Conquest cross fragments from St Oswald's Church, Collingham. The cross fragments are still in the church.
This fragment is the foot of a shaft, and it has been suggested that this is the base of PRN 7268. The pattern on this fragment and on PRN 7268 do not match up (with the exception of one face where there are strong similarities). However, it is possible that the design on some faces changed slightly further down the shaft and given that the stone and workmanship are the same for both fragments is is possible that they are from the same cross.
This fragment is unusually well preserved, it was probably buried at a very early period. The work is chiselled and hacked and dates from either the late 9th Century or is a later carving done in an early style.
