TitlePre-Conquest Crosses (one of three now in All Saints' Church)
DescriptionOne of three Pre Conquest crosses standing in All Saints' Church, Ilkley (also see PRN 1982 and 7252). The crosses were originally placed outside the church, they were moved inside the church after excavations of 1982 1983 as their conditions were deteriorating due to weathering.
This shaft has distinct cable edging, and the carving is very sharp in the areas where it isn't destroyed. The designs include rounded scroll stems, branch bindings, leaves and fruit bunches. This shaft was formerly used as a gatepost, which explains why it is so damaged. At the top of one face is what appears to be two naked human figures. It is possible that these represent Adam and Eve with the tree and serpent. In the panel below the human figures is a pair of fighting animals. Below these are a pair of beasts stood back to back, and at the very bottom of this face is a tree with birds on the branches. This shaft probably dates to the late 9th century.
