TitleSt Mary the Virgin
DescriptionSite of chantry chapel of St Mary the Virgin, of which the last priest d.1565. It was in existence 1376 and after the Dissolution was used as a school until 1728 when it was again converted to warehouse use. It was apparently demolished to enlarge the bridge in 1760 when observations suggested that the stonework of both chapel and bridge were so inter related that they must have been co eval (see Wardell's 'Antiquities of Leeds'). If the last statement were true, then the site marked on the 1847 O.S. might be a little suspect as it stands 100 m. back from the river and it would seem unlikely that a site here would relate so directly to the structure of a former bridge. All available evidence needs collating and re appraising should development be proposed along the east side of the road between Call Lane and the bridge; extent of destruction by cellaring would also need rapid assessment before effort is directed to these ends.
