TitleElland Bridge
DescriptionMedieval/Post medieval bridge abuttment identified during building work August 1995 (exposed but not removed); coincides with the configuration of the bridge as shown on the map of 1579. Abuttment is ca. 1.75 m. wide, rubble core faced with freestone on the SE face and gritstone ashlar on the NW face; very limey mortar. Evidence of very steep drop to north and west. Overlain with gritstone cobbles, which extended SE under causeway which leads down to Gas Works Lane. Apart from this archaeological survival, whole of extant bridge probably early 19th century rebuild contemporary with canal.
