Title | Possible battlefield of the Battle of Winwaed |
Description | One of several possible sites for the battle of Winwaed, fought 15/11/655 between Penda, King of Mercia, and Oswy, King of Bernician the northern division of Northumbria), and one of the most decisive battles in ANglo Saxon history (Oswy's army won). Battle mentioned by Bede who says it was fought near the river Winwaed in the country of Loides. Site at least partially built on. What Broadhead's reasons are choosing this spot are not apparent. There are three other suggested sites for the battle: one is at SE 520167 in South Yorkshire, one (by Walker) is at SE 421 176 between Wragby Church and Consititution Hill (see PRN 12428), and the other (suggested by Andrew Breeze) is at SE 471 177 inbetween East Hardwick and the River Went (PRN 12495). |
