TitleChapel in garden of Bowcliffe Hall
DescriptionNostell Priory had considerable holdings in Bramham cum Oglethorpe and the relevant documentary sources (including a trawl through the unpublished Nostell Chartulary) have yet to be gathered together. Not currently aware that a cell was maintained here but the listed building description for a chapel at SE 4241 4226, 50 m. west of Bowcliffe Hall, considers it probably to be 19th century incorporating some fabric from cell of Nostell Priory; or, just possibly 15th century. This record clearly demands enhancement when further fieldwork and/or documentary work completed; in the interim, the general area around Bowcliffe should be considered as of archaeological potential.
Text edited from English Heritage LBO description (03/12/1986):
The building itself is built of coursed squared magnesian limestone and has a stone slate roof. It has a very small rectangular shape that is only of a single cell approximately 5 x 3 metres. The south side has a doorway with a hollow chamfered surround, a four centred arched head, a restored hoodmould and double doors with traceried panels. To the right of this is a Pernpendicular window of three cusped lights with hollow chamfered mullions and a hoodmould. The interior of the building has a coffered wooden ceiling with moulded beams and joists, which is probably of 19th century date.
