TitleApplehaigh (Farm)
DescriptionArable land was granted in Applehaigh in Notton c.1200 but it seems never to have been a separate hamlet within Notton township. Classification as a medieval settlement follows S.A.Moorhouse's notes on SMR card (44315235), but there is no evidence in the SMR that there was in fact a medieval settlement here (other than the initial farm implied by the name Eadbald's haga). Field names 'Dam Crofts' lie just across stream to the north and 'Mill Close' lies east of stream, c.300 m. to north east. These may relate to a documented dam in Applehaigh (late 12th to early 13th century; see Monkbretton Chartulary, also damaged version of same(?) charter in Woolley Park MSS).
The earliest explicit record of a mill is in c.1561 (a cornmill called 'Abaldhaghe'; Woolley Park MSS); mill apparently shown on Saxton's map of 1599. APs show the modern farm and provide no further archaeological evidence. Buildings description (relating to farm buildings only) suggests nothing earlier than c.1790 1820 (see PRN 11584). The cart shed, barn, granary and associated buildings are not listable but are of some architectural distinctionand of 'local interest'. Note: some land here was clearly held from the Knights Templars (Woolley Park MSS) and further doc.refs may therefore be found in Templar or Hospitaller records.
