TitleCarved Rock, south east of Dobrudden Caravan park
DescriptionLarge, fairly smooth grit rock, embedded in spoil from bell pit crater iron stained shale moved when pit dug? Or in situ and covered with spoil? NW slightly domed end just visible above grass. During a site visit (11/07/1994) the SE end, which slopes about 0.6m below ground level was excavated. Uneven, but fairly flat surface slopes NW SE. Symmetrical bedding lines round NW sloping edge, continuing round to SW. Complex design all over surface of rock. More than twenty cups, various sizes and depths, grooves partly encircling large deep cups,connecting with other cups. Oval `enclosure' with three connected cups inside, at NW.
Description from English Heritage Scheduled Monument Record for SAM no 25404 (06/10/1995); The monument includes a carved gritstone rock, partly buried in spoil from a shaft mound, and level with the ground surface. The exposed portion measures 0.9m by 0.8m. It is situated adjacent to the large shaft mound south east of Dobrudden Caravan park. Its grid reference by Global Positioning System is SE 13766 39894. The carving consists of a complex design all over the surface of the rock, much of it currently hidden by spoil, but recorded as having more than 20 cups, grooves partly enclosing deep cups, and a groove enclosing three connected cups.
