Description | Large fairly smooth grit rock standing out of deep heather, with several well marked grooves running from cups on its rounded top, which could be natural but are quite possibly man made. Description from the English Heritage Scheduled Monument notification for SAM no 25296 (13/06/1995); The monument includes a carved rock of fairly smooth gritstone, 3m x 2.4m x 0.8m. It is located on the north slope of the ridge at Lanshaw, north of Upper Lanshaw Dam and overlooking Woofa Bank. Its grid reference by Global Positioning System is SE 13481 45424. The carving consists of several well marked grooves running from cups on the rounded top down the sloping upper surface of the rock. |
