Description | Farmstead, Gorple, with small area of associated stone walled fields, abandoned probably c. 1900 with costruction of the Pennine reservoirs and creation of water catchment areas. The failure of the dual economy with increasing industrialisation, may also have contributed to its decline as with several other similar farmsteads in the Pennine area. Buildings and field walls still stand in ruinous state. No evidence that it is of much earlier date than nineteenth century unless there has been considerable rebuilding (but get opinion of buildings officer); earliest date cited by Smith 1961 (W.R.Pl.Names, part 3, p. 193) is 1575 but that may be to the name Gorple which may have been given to this area before the farm was establshed (yet to find actual ref. in Halifax Antiq.Soc. papers 26,73). Field inspection (by WYAS in first instance) to assess archaeological value and potential of the site (if any). |
