Description | AP shows a building at Thorps on the edge of Erringden Moor with a landscape of partially decayed(?) fields to its north west; not certain whther this building includes habitation or is purely agricultural in function. Some apparent banks and a linear depression in the field immediately north east of the building are of uncertain origin; some may be natural but the area needs field inspection (by WYAS in first instance) to identify any remains of an archaeological nature. Oaks Farm, c. 280 m to the north north west, appears is still in use and some apparent linear banks immediately to its south east correlate with filed boundaries and a track marked on the 1:2500 O.S.; these should however, be inspected at the same time as the Thorps area. Oaks is documented in 1717 but there is no early historical reference to Thorps as a medieval or even post medieval name in the place name volumes; it is, however, marked on 1st edn. 6 O.S., sheet 229. |
