TitleGrim's Ditch
DescriptionThere is no information about this section of Grim’s Ditch in the file and it is marked on the strip map as a conjectural line running from SE 3764 3010 and SE 3747 3046. In Wheelhouse and Burgess, 2001, it is suggested that the course of the monument to the south of Gamblethorpe Farm may be a result of the construction of a post medieval trackway. This trackway is visible on the Swillington tithe plan of 1799 and the 1st edition OS map of 1847 (6' to 1 mile series), where it links Bullerthorpe House to Gamblethorpe Farm, and then continues south towards Wakefield Road east of Swillington Bridge. However, this is speculative, and archaeological investigation on the north bank of the River Aire near to the bridge failed to find any evidence of the monument (see Wheelhouse and Burgess, 2001 for more details). If the monument were to follow the line of this trackway, it would intersect Wakefield Road just to the north of Jinny Moor Lane.
See T Wilmott (1993) for information of excavation and survey along the line of Grim’s Ditch 1977 83.
