Title | Huntwick Grange |
Description | Formerly postulated as a grange of Nostell Priory by DJHM (Survey vol.2) but omitted from list of granges (Survey vol.3); SAM could find no real evidence, although it is clear that the priory had land there. Subsequent identification of the so called Nostell Act Book has now produced reference to famuli at Huntwick in c. early 14th century. This substantiates the former existence of a grange and the area in and around the present farm (including buildings) should be inspected in the first instance to establish the need for further evaluation. Note also, the proximity of cropmarks (including an enclosure) just to the south east (PRN 789); these are presumed to be of much earlier date but the question of a possible relationship to the grange should be left open. Also (1997) new possible cropmarks immediately north east of farm (PRN 6734). |
