TitleSt Aidan's Remainder
DescriptionGeophysical survey on British Coal OE site. Include cropmarks which extend to south on PRN 4570 Area of excavation is now Class 4 but there is a continuing concern for possible palaeo environmental deposits under the former Savile Pit site in effect the Pit area is Class 3.
A gradiometer survey, comprising an area of c. 300m X 100m, was carried out by WYAS in August 1991, on land between Shan House and abandoned mine workings. A large number of ditches of earlier land divisions/field system were detected within which smaller sub divisions were observed. The land divisions terminated a short distance of the edge of the upper terrace edge, with the presence of smaller ditches and possible kiln/oven type anomalies on the terrace edge suggesting occupation or industrial activity. A sub circular enclosure observed on air photographs of the site was not detected using the magnetometer. The site stands within a broad prehistoric landscape (Boucher Jan 1992).
