TitleIron Age/Roman ditches, trackways and field boundaries (cropmarks), Scholey Hill
DescriptionCropmarks of an east west lane, presumed to be a westerly continuation of that lane traversing the whole of the upper terrace area through Methley, just past Scholey Hill Farm and Parkin Farm it turns towards the south and runs off the terrace edge towards the river but it is unclear whether it actually terminates in this vicinity. Other linear ditches associated with the lane; also a branch lane running northwards towards Hungate; it is just possible that these lanes are not a continuation of the Iron Age landscape but medieval road lanes which have been subsequently shifted onto their present metalled courses. Other slight cropmarks in the area between the M62 and Hungate are too unclear to be interpreted easily but the whole area lies on the upper terrace and is regarded as of potential for early settlement on the basis of experience on much of the remainder of the Methley terraces; some grosser marks are almost certainly former stream courses and these may warrant assessment as sources of palaeo environmental information. Evaluation required in face of development.

The cropmarks were recorded by English Heritage during the Lower Wharfedale Air Photograph Interpretation project (aka National Mapping Programme NMP) in 2003. The features were described as Iron Age/ Roman ditches, trackways, field boundaries and a possible enclosure centred at SE 3768 2583. Two sinuous, ditched trackways are visible. The first runs north west southeast from SE 3764 2599 to SE 3780 2576, while the second runs north east south west from SE 3792 2590 to SE 3738 2558. The junction between them appears to show evidence of re cutting. The latter trackway merges with a natural paleochannel to the south which masks any other features.Several field boundaries and ditches can be seen in association with these features and it appears very likely that this site is a continuation of the cropmark complex at Methley (SE 32 NE 22/ UID 921568) To the east, at SE 3747 2586, lies a possible incomplete ditched enclosure. It is 'D' shaped in form and measures 63m by 53m (Oakey, 2003)
