TitleSite of Chadwick Hall (demolished)
DescriptionChadwick Hall Farm. Formerly the site of Chadwick Hall, a stone and half timbered structure thought by DJH Michelmore (1981) and C. Giles (1978 81) to date from the 16th century. One of the associated farm buildings (a long, low stone structure, probably originally a barn or laithe house, subsequently converted to cottages) probably at least contemporary with the main structure.

Terracing and possible earthworks (possibly platforms?) visible in OS field nos. 7341 and 8451. Recorded by YAS Medieval section in late 1970s/early 1980s. Archive held by Jack Sugden.

In 1999 an excavation was undertaken by Archaeological Services WYAS (ASWYAS) on the site of this demolished late medieval hall in advance of the construction of a residental development which necessitated the excavation of a service trench across the NW corner of the foundations of the hall.
The north part of the solar wing and the footings of a possible staircase tower were identified in the trench, along with internal dividing walls and a probable fireplace. An extensive layer of cobbles was revealed immediately to the east of the building, and a number of later brick built structures associated with the hall were also investigated.
No artefactual evidence was recovered with which to date the construction of the hall. The foundations of the remainder of the building were exposed, recorded and carefully reburied beneath layers of sand, terram geotextile and granular stone, prior to the redevelopment of the site (Medieval Archaeology: Vol XLIII, 1999).
