TitleYarwellgate
DescriptionPossible site Medieval fishery. The place name Yarewelhill is recorded in 1454, probably derived from the OE gear fishing dam. The name Yarwellgate survives locally, although it does not appear on any OS map. Site lies on the north bank of what is now an oxbow on the River Calder (the Half Moon,) and comprises the apparent remains of a narrow channel cut through the river bank, bridged at its northern end by a dam, possibly representing the weir or fishery structure which would have contained the fish traps or weals. Silted up and forming the focus of a reed bed in 1977. Welbeck area subject of large scale re development plans, 1991. Requires site visit to determine present condition of site, and earthwork survey.
