Description | Mill race serving Abbey Mills (formerly Kirkstall Abbey Mills), Savings Mill (now demolished), St Annes Mill (buildings related to mill race now demolished?) and Burley Mills. The section of the race between the northern weir and St Annes Mill may be 14th c. in origin (R. Fitzgerald), with Abbey Mills possibly representing Kirkstall Abbey's second corn mill, coming into use after the abandonment of the first mill which stood to the NW of the Abbey proper (check doc.refs for dates). Watermills are marked in the approximate positions of Abbey Mills, Savings Mill and St Annes Mill on the Jeffreys Map of 1775. The eastern stretch of the race, from St. Annes Mill to just below Burley Mill, dates from the late 18th/early 19th c. and was constructed to serve Burley Mills; it incorporates a short stretch of the original line of the river, which connects the two man made sections of the race (the line of the river parallel to this was straightened artificially at the same period). Further work required in the form of recording and analysis to establish date of origin and details of structural development. |
