TitleWatching Brief at 22-28 Micklegate, Pontefract
DescriptionTrial excavation and watching brief carried out in advance of development. The northwestern third of the site, along the street frontage, had been obliterated by deep vaulted Victorian cellarage. Observation and excavation were within foundation trenches on the southeastern side of the site to a depth, in places, of 2 m. Excavation yielded three post holes of indeterminate date, a quantity of pottery of dates ranging from the 12th to the 17th centuries, a small asssemblage of iron objects and slag, and a single AE pin. There was some evidence for a possible water conduit system in the northern quadrant of the site; date indeterminate. Archaeological deposits were confined to this quadrant. Site now built over; requirement for further work in area undisturbed by present foundations if site is ever redeveloped.
