TitleWatcing Brief between Northgate and Back Northgate, Pontefract
DescriptionWYAS watching brief in advance of road alteration/development. Observation carried out of sections resulting from machine stripping to bedrock, and of service trenches, revealed Medieval remains adjacent to and the full length of Cockpit Lane between Northgate and Back Northgate (centred on grid ref. above.) Remains indicated settlement along Northgate frontage (surfaces in section, portion of ?garderobe to rear of plot), with possible access from Back Northgate in form of trackway with adjacent revetting wall. Remainder of area stripped for development (centred SE 4555 2215) yielded no obvious remains except for unstratified medieval pot from section at approx. SE 4545 2215. Area as marked on location map now sterile for archaeological purposes.
