TitleExcavation at 29 Booths, Pontefract
DescriptionExcavation in advance of development on the site of curtilage of 29 the Booths. Features considerably truncated, but remains were revealed of a number of pits and post holes interpreted as Medieval/Post medieval in date and agricultural in function, and of a substantial ditch. The ditch, in excess of 2 m. deep as found, was on alignment with the section of the June, 1645 ditch exposed to the east of this site in 1985 (PRN 3800), and is probably a portion of the same feature. Dug on 13 June 1645 by the Royalist defenders of the then besieged Pontefract Castle, it was used to maintain contact with troops occupying All Saints Church, and to bring fodder into the Castle. Wheel ruts detected in the floor of the ditch probably reflect this latter use. Traces of a stone breast work were detected along the south edge of the feature.
