TitleErringden Park
DescriptionErringden Park. Manorial park of the Earls Warenne. The area of the park appears to coincide with the area of Erringden township an enormous size for a deer park; possibly actually administered as forest rather than park? Site of iron working, charcoal burning, possibly of kennels (reflected in name of farm within park boundaries Kenelshawe in 1621). Sowerby Ramble, an attenuated portion of Sowerby township which fringes Erringden township along the banks of the Calder, may represent (water?) meadows deliberately excluded from the area of the park to preserve their commercial/agricultural viability (v. parallels in Southowram round Elland Park and Rothwell round Rothwell Haigh). Erringden Park largely preserved as agricultural land. Field survey in an attempt to locate site of metal working desirable but may be impracticable in view of size of area. N.B. Erringden Park should share a common boundary with Withens vaccary (PRN 4407), possibly down Jack Clough (SD 979 233). BY adds: Surely, the later 'township' arose as a result of the disemparkment of Erringden and it is not therefore surprising that the township is coincident with the park. Why should it be administered as a forest? is there any evidence of this? Is 'agricultural land' an adequate description? some of it is enclosed but I think much of it is rough ground or moorland. Yet to cross reference with APs.
