Description | Lister Park is a Registered Park and Garden that contains a number of Listed Buildings (including the Grade II Cartwright Memorial Hall: Art Gallery and Museum List Entry No. 1133051). The 22 hectare landscaped public park and pleasure grounds was brought for the City of Bradford in 1870. The garden contains a lake with waterfall, terraces, rock gardens, tree walks, and a botanical garden (English Heritage U.D.). The nucleus of estate belonging to S.C. Lister, sold by him to the City of Bradford in 1870 with the provison that 40 acres should be devoted to public use. Encompassed Deer Park, site of Manningham Hall (PRN 7859), and park to the south of Manningham Hall. Lister additionally sponsored (and partially funded) the construction of the Cartwright Memorial Hall Art Gallery and Museum (architects JW Simpson and EJM Allen), which opened in 1904 and formed the centrepiece of the Bradford Exhibition of that year. Cartwright Hall replaced Manningham Hall on the same site. The four foundation cornerstones of Cartwright Hall are said by Taylor to have been the bed of the old engine at Lister's Manningham Mills. Garden features include lake and waterfall, rock gardens, and botanic gardens. Open air swimming pool opened 1915. Extensive alteration would be cause for concern fine example of Edwardian city park. A 'flint chipping' was found 'in shrubbery in Lister Park' in 1959 (sic). |
