TitleThe Old Bear Pit, Cardigan Road
DescriptionVictorian bear pit. Single surviving component of Leeds Zoological and Botanical gardens (PRN 3989). Circular stone pit fronted with stone wall flanked by circular crenellated turrets. The wall is pierced by 3 openings a semicircular arch flanked by two low doorways, all heavily grilled (present grilles/gates installed 1960s). The turrets are said to have functioned as platforms for viewing into the bear pit. Renovated in the mid 1960s; purchased by Leeds Civic Trust in 1966. Bear pit may have been deliberately retained as a landscape feature when the gardens were parcelled into building land in the late 19th c., since Cardigan Road curves slightly to pass directly in front of it. Monitor for possible alterations to setting (there is vacant land to the E of the structure.)
