TitleManor House Museum
DescriptionIlkley Manor House is a stone house, dating back to late medieval times but dominated by 16th and 17th buildings periods. The earliest phase is represented by the through passage at the west end of the hall range; other features that are possibly retained from the late medieval house include another door at first floor level in the west wall of the passage, and the stack on the north wall of the hall range. In the late 16th century the house was rebuilt; this phase is represented by the present hall range and east wing. The west wing is later in date, and the window style (straight chamfered mullions and dip mould over) suggests a date in the late 17th century (Giles, 1978).
Foundation of 14th c. building, partly re using Roman wall foundation, discovered beneath the foundations of the Ilkley Manor House Museum in 1965. Part of the visible portion of the wall (which stood to a height of ca. 4 ft.) contained the remains of a garderobe, which yielded 14th c. pottery (manufactured in Skipton?) Bulk of the structure ran beneath the Manor House and a live sewer main, and so was not accessible to excavation.
