TitleTwo pre-Conquest cross fragments at St Oswald's Church
DescriptionTwo of seven cross fragments found at St Oswald's Church, Collingham. These two stones are from the same cross shaft, known as the 'Apostles' shaft.
This shaft is of lightly coloured, coarse grit stone and is weathered. Together, the two fragments stand about 44 inches high. Twelve figures are depicted on the shaft, all are male either sitting or standing and holding scrolls or books. Collingwood (1914) notes that the pose and drapery of the figures seem to suggest that these figures were copied from pictures.
