TitleCinder Hill (place name)
DescriptionCinder Hill; cinder place name element may indicate the presence of a substantial deposit of iron slag in the area. Possible Medieval/Post medieval/Industrial iron working site. In addition to the place name evidence, the field between that which bears the Cinder Hill place name and Gelderd Road contains well defined earthworks of ridge and furrow, headland, and hollow way; there also appear to be flat areas which may be building platforms at the top of the rise ( the field falls away steeply to the east). The earthworks appear to be cut by Gelderd Road, which is a turnpike road dating from the first half of the 18th century. Further WYAS appraisal in first instance.
