The first coded entry occurs in Oct 1806, in a Greek script used to note the date or time of day. Gradually Anne Lister used this 'code' to record her correspondence with Eliza Raine, her school friend, and with Mr Knight, By 1808 this script, decipherable to anyone with Greek, had developed into the code which runs through the rest of her diaries.
