From 6 1/2 to 8 1/2 settle accounts and wrote the last 40 lines of yesterday’s Travelling journal — breakfast at 9 both this
morning and yesterday in my room, without Jane — Talking to Mrs. Barlow both a little before and after breakfast [illegible]
[illegible] from about 12 to 12 50/60 finish (that is wrote page 3 and the ends)
letter to IN- [Isabella Norcliffe], dated the 3rd 5th and 8th instant, explaining that Mrs. Barlow and our coachman had been ill, and that it was
impossible for me to be at home on the 20th instant — did not expect getting back before after the middle of next
month, but still hoped to see her — would contrive some way comfortably — could sleep on my sofa more comfortably
than I had slept of late — if all well, and deo volente [God willing], should certainly be in England next Summer —
From 1 to 2 1/2 wrote to M- [Mariana] from 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 dinner — From then to five and three quarters with Mrs. Barlow on the
bed right middle finger up ~ from 6 to 8 40/60 had an ice, and finished my letter 3 ppages and the ends, very
small and close to M- [Mariana] copied the main of what I had written to IN- [Isabella Norcliffe] about our being laid up by the way,
about the time of my return, and her coming to us in Paris — (small sheets both to IN- [Isabella Norcliffe] and M- [Mariana]) — then reading
over my letter to M- [Mariana] partly to Mrs. Barlow etc. 1/2 hour very fine day —

Got up at six for twenty but unluckily went to Mrs. Barlow talkation about whether I loved
her best teazed dozed till someone peeped into the room and I jumped up ~ Breakfast at 10 3/4 —
Filled the space under the seal, very small and close, to M- [Mariana] very affectionate letter — out from 12 20/60 to 2 1/2 —
put into the post office myself my letter to M- [Mariana] (Lawton) and to IN- [Isabella Norcliffe] (Langton) — See the cathedral —
Settle accounts and wrote travelling journal of this morning till 3 1/2 — Dinner at 4 5/60 — out from 5 40/60 to
8 1/4 — buy stockings — get Ivory tablets mended — quite a godsend to me to get them fit to use again — Price
of Leghorn hats — Churches of St. Etienne, St. Nazare, and St. Catherine — great hospital — palazzo
Annoni. valley of Milan from — writing till 9 — very fine day — price of pines —

Just before getting into bed last night went to Mrs. Barlow and gave her a very good right midd
le finger up ditto this morning too but not quite so good to her though as she lay over my left
thigh I really did which is very unusual feel a little got up about six and went to her till nine
Breakfast at 10 1/4 — my watch having stopped about six this morning knew nothing of the time —
out in the carriage from 11 10/60 to 3 4/60 — Dinner from 4 to 5 25/60 My cousin came just before I sat
down to dinner ~ Saw palaces and churches — very sleepy after dinner — Lay down by Mrs. Barlow tal
king (on her bed) till seven and a half ~ from about 8 to 9 3/4 wrote out the whole of Travelling journal
of today, settled the accounts, and wrote out this private journal from Sunday up to tonight — very fine day —

See Italian bread made — Breakfast from 8 to 9 — Stabilini’s cheese dairy, great hospital museum etc. etc.
Dinner from 4 to 5 25/60 — out from 6 25/60 to 8 — had lemonade — got my watch from the mender — settled accounts
till 9 1/2 — fine morning — rain from about 3 to 4 p.m. fine evening —

till 9 35/60 — very fine day —

Como, at 8 20/60 — from 9 3/4 to 11 wrote out travelling journal of today — from 11 to 12 settling accounts —
the dividing backwards and forwards work of money is tedious and tiresome — very fine day —

Slept together in a huiusbed obliged right middle finger up last night. Breakfast
from 9 3/4 to 10 1/2 — settled accounts etc. till 11 1/2 — on the lake (of Lugano) from 11 40/60 to 2 20/60 — Dinner at
2 35/60 — off from Lugano at 3 25/60 — singularly beautiful drive — at the Angel at Varese (in a thunder storm)
at 9 1/4 — without saying a word about prices, shewed our bill at Como, and the man consented to the same
terms — very fine day till 8, when very heavy rain and not much thunder but a great deal of lightning —

called at 5 — rained all the night got up for 20 minutes at 7 50/60, but went to bed again — very rainy
morning, and continued raining till between 2 and 3 p.m. — Unluckily went to just kiss Mrs. Barlow on getting up and
got into bed to her right middle finger up at three different times a little dozing bet
ween each first very good to her felt a very little myself at last from just being ra
ther near her thigh this and the rain quite reconciled her to stay all day without fancying
it for me and it is convenient for me to write ~ Breakfast from 12 35/60 to 1 1/2 — from 1 1/2 to 5 40/60
wrote out (amongst hands teaching Jane division and giving her easy sums — division 1 figure) the travelling journals
of Tuesday and yesterday Dinner from 5 40/60 to 6 25/60 — then made notes of today — 35 minutes settling and looking
over the accounts — from 7 1/2 to 9 wrote wafer and direct 3 ppages (small dutch paper sheet) and one end to my aunt —
said what I had told IN- [Isabella Norcliffe] about being at home on the 20th of next month, but all would depend upon what
I heard from my aunt at Geneva — said we hoped to be off from here (Varese) tomorrow, and get to Geneva
in about 5 days — Rainy day till between 2 and 3 p.m. then fair and tolerably fine — great deal of rain here
they say, for the last fortnight —

postage — Paid nothing at Padua or Milan — she will get it in 6 days — Dinner from 1 25/60 to 2 50/60
Off from Sesto at 3 10/60 — Stresa at 6 25/60 having unaccountably passed Arona without knowing it —
Exceedingly annoyed at having done so — from 7 to 8 1/2 wrote out Travelling journal of today — from 8 1/2 to
9 25/60 wrote out from Saturday up to night of this private journal — from 9 25/60 to 9 55/60 settling the accounts —
rained all last night and till 7 this morning — threatened rain once or twice, but fine day till 7 1/2 p.m.
when a little distant thunder and a few flashes of lightning and heavy rain for near an hour — It seems to be
raining again now at 10 p.m. —

3 20/60 to 4 10/60 — Off from Stresa at 4 1/4 — at Vogogna at 7 3/4 — from 8 to 9 10/60 wrote all but the 1st 7 or 8 lines
Travelling journal of today — Rain all last night and more or less all today — vide travelling journal —

off from there at 9 20/60 — alight at the village of Simplon at 3 25/60 — wrote 3 or 4 lines travelling journal Dinner
from 4 5/60 to 5 25/60 — from 5 25/60 to 9 wrote out all but the first 3 or 4 lines travelling journal of today — then wrote
yesterday and today of this private journal which took me till 9 1/4 — Settling accounts etc. till 10 — Rain all last night
and more or less all today till near 4 p.m. afterwards pretty fine evening —
