| Description | Dr John Lister (1802-1867) was the great grandson of Thomas Lister of Virginia and his wife Anne Lewes. Having left Swansea, he had a successful medical practice in Sandown, Isle of Wight, before inheriting Shibden Hall following the death in 1853 of Ann Walker, who had been left a life interest in Shibden. He married Louisa Anne Gant and they had three children, John, Charles and Anne. Dr John was a member of philosophical., paleontological and microscopical societies. The hall and estate needed much maintenance but profits from the coal mines enabled further improvements including a greenhouse and decorative flower garden. Includes his letters describing his voyages as ship's surgeon; the Walker versus Lister case; family and estate affairs. Also accounts, passports, records relating to his younger son, Charles, etc
