DescriptionFrancis Fawkes 1721-1777 was a poet and translator born near Doncaster. He was educated at Bury Grammar School and Cambridge, after which he took orders. Fawkes translated "Anacreon", "Sappho" and other classics, modernised parts of the poems of Gavin Douglas and was the author of the well-known song "The Brown Jug" and of 2 poems "Bramham Park" and "Partidge Shooting". His translation of the "Argonautica"appeared in 1780
